New Year, New Me???
What to do at the start of the new year especially after the last year we had.
“New Year, New Me”; I’m very sure you have heard this sentence so many times it’s impossible to count how many, Does one really become a new person simply because of a date change in the Gregorian calendar? Bear in mind that there are several different calendar systems in the world, does that mean that for every new calendar year and every different kind of calendar one becomes different?
Well, to most people, the short answer is NO. One doesn't become a new person because the year changed on the calendar, however, I think that one can make active, transformative choices that irrespective of the date and time make one better such that they are regarded as a “Changed” or “New” person.
The year 2020 did a number on a whole lot of people, and there’s almost no one who you’d ask that would say they didn’t experience a change( for better or worse) in their perception. What differentiates us is our reaction following the different things we went through individually and collectively.
For me, it was the realisation that the things and people I used to think matter actually do not in the grand scheme of things, I discovered and experienced the gift of true friendship, the meaning of kindness and how happiness is indeed a personal choice.
And so this new year, I’m choosing to bring forward all the lessons learnt from the past year, improving on the things I can and focus on becoming better daily. I am choosing to laugh and dance even if it’s me waking up randomly at 3 AM and dancing alone in my room, it’s choosing to be even more vulnerable and sharing more of myself with other people which is why I started this blog(AGAIN). It’s choosing myself over situations and people who wouldn’t, it’s choosing to live, love and laugh every waking day. It’s choosing to be HAPPY in every sense of the word so help me God.
Back to my first question, Does one really become a new person simply because of a date change in the calendar? Most people would answer in the negative, but I’d say the choice is Yours and Yours alone to make. If you’d like to become a new person this year, then you most certainly can and should do so without fear or judgement from any other person.
Happy New Year 2021, have an amazing year and may your year go exactly how you envision it for yourself. Cheers!
